The Indonesian Post released the official first day cover, Fauna 1989, features Pongo Pigmaeus as an endangered species from Indonesia on March 8,1989. This issue FDC as local WWF cover conjunct with the released of WWF stamp series Pongo Pigmaeus upon theme of Fauna 1989.
Pongo Pigmaeus or The Bornean orangutan has a distinctive body shape with very long arms that may reach up to two metres in length. They have a coarse, shaggy reddish coat and grasping hands and feet. They are highly sexually dimorphic, with adult males being distinguished by their large size, throat pouch and flanges on either side of the face, known as cheek pads.
Pongo pygmaeus is a species of orangutan native to the island of Borneo. Its belong to the only genus of great apes native to Asia.The Bornean orangutan lives in tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests in the Bornean lowlands as well as mountainous areas 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) in elevation. It lives at different heights in the trees and moves large distances to find trees bearing fruit.
Pongo pygmaeus or the Bornean orangutan is an endangered species, due to deforestation, oil-palm plantations and killing posing a serious threat to its continued existence.
